Educational support to Students K-12 struggling with homelessness and poverty.
The "Understanding ME" Youth Leadership Peer to Peer Workshop is designed to leverage peer education as a robust system for imparting knowledge and fostering social learning. Through this workshop, participants will gain insights into their personal triggers, emotions, and reactions, thereby fostering a more profound understanding of themselves.
Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains a challenging topic, especially within communities of color. Unfortunately, people of color, particularly within Black communities, are often less likely to seek mental health support. This reluctance can be attributed to various factors, including cultural stigma and a lack of open dialogue about such issues in the home.
Removing the stigma surrounding mental health in black and brown communities is deeply rooted and multifaceted. Traditionally, there has been a strong emphasis on resilience and self-reliance, leading many individuals to believe that seeking help is a sign of weakness. This cultural perspective can prevent open discussions about mental health struggles, thereby exacerbating the issue. Additionally, historical mistrust of medical institutions can further discourage individuals from seeking professional help.
Recent statistics from 2024 highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Black individuals regarding mental health support:
