Educate, Advocate and Serve
The "Understanding ME" Youth Leadership Workshop is designed to provide psychosocial support to students and families. Through this workshop, students will gain insights into their personal triggers, emotions, and reactions, thereby fostering a more profound understanding of themselves.
As of 2025, CDC data indicates a persistent youth mental health crisis, with high rates of depression, sadness, and suicidal ideation among U.S. high schoolers, especially girls and LGBTQ+ students, although some 2023-2024 trends showed slight improvements in hopelessness, masking deeper struggles, and mental health-related emergency visits remain elevated, highlighting ongoing challenges from stress, anxiety, and the pandemic's lingering effects. Our understanding "ME" youth leadership workshop provides education, resources, support, and services.
Among students of color, including AI/AN, Asian, Black, Hispanic, and multiracial students, the prevalence of seriously considering and attempting suicide was more than two times higher among students who ever compared with never experienced racism. These findings demonstrate that racism in the school setting is experienced by high school students attending public and private schools and continues to disproportionately affect students of color. Students who reported experiencing racism had a higher prevalence of indicators of poor mental health, suicide risk, and substance use.

In response to these challenges, we have developed Community Outreach Workshops aimed at dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health issues in Black and Brown communities. These workshops are a collaborative effort involving Community Health Workers, Mental Health Professionals, and dedicated Community Volunteers.

Raise Awareness: Educate students, parents, and educators about the impact of racism on mental health.
Provide Support: Offer resources and support systems for students experiencing mental health challenges.
Foster Inclusivity: Promote an inclusive school environment where all students feel valued (seen) and respected (heard).
Encourage Open Dialogue: Create safe spaces for discussions about mental health and racism.

On April 26, 2025, we hosted a transformative 5-hour mental health workshop titled "Understanding 'ME'" for youth and families. This workshop focused on emotional intelligence (EQ) and its importance in mental health and personal development.
